International PhD program in protein biotechnology

BioToP Meets Industry

September 21 & 22, 2026

We are pleased to invite you to BioToP Meets Industry, an FWF-funded event organized by the BioToP doctoral program at BOKU University Vienna that aims to connect industry professionals with the next generation of protein biotechnology researchers.

Each half-day will include selected research presentations by our PhD students, a poster session covering all current projects in BioToP and interactive discussion rounds designed to encourage open exchange between participants.
The first day will conclude with a networking dinner, giving everyone additional time to connect in a relaxed setting.

Day 1: 21 September 2026 - registration and welcome snack at 12:00.

  • Fiona Spreitzer Surface amino acid selection for well-expressible proteins
  • Andreas Fradinger Plants-on-a-chip: microfluidics-based real-time tracking of protein body formation in plant cells
  • Chiara Amoroso Engineering thermostable SAET ancestral variants through site-directed mutagenesis to improve dipeptide synthesis
  • Alice Cassiani Unravelling the structural role of the [2Fe-2S] cluster in actinobacterial coproporphyrin ferrochelatase
  • followed by a poster session, discussion rounds and a networking dinner

Day 2: 22 September 2026 - 9:00 - approx 14:00.

  • Dominik Hörtnagel Beyond classical models: How QM/MM simulations reveal enzymatic reaction mechanisms
  • Miriam Fernández-Giro Find your protein look-alike: a numeric surface shape similarity search
  • Stanislav Juračka Expanding the synthetic biology toolbox of Komagataella phaffii with promoters and terminators from diverse yeast species
  • Sophie Huber REM-BAC - a scalable path to precision engineered producer cell lines
  • followed by a poster session, discussion rounds and a farewell snack

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • gain direct insights into current research in protein biotechnology,
  • meet early-career scientists who will soon enter the job market, and
  • engage in small-group discussions with doctoral researchers on topics related to science, career paths, and collaboration opportunities.

We warmly welcome participants from industry, start-ups, applied research organizations, regulatory bodies, patent law, and related fields who are interested in learning about emerging research and connecting with potential future collaborators or employees.

If you would like to join us, please register free of costs.
We would be delighted to welcome you to this exchange between BioToP researchers and the broader protein biotechnology community.
